The town of Fuengirola has plenty to keep kids of all ages entertained from a water park to a zoological park (Bioparc Fuengirola). While if you can drag yourself away from the beach in Benalmádena, there’s a cable car to ride and Paloma Park where little ones will love the play equipment and free-roaming rabbits, chickens and ducks. Alcudia is always a hit with families thanks to its handsome medieval old town and arguably one of the best beaches on the island. While staying in Palma Nova will allow you to combine down time by the pool with a few hours in the island’s capital Palma, a 20-minute drive away. For the ultimate relaxing family break, Santa Ponsa has a calm beach and sprawling all-inclusive resorts to keep the whole crew busy while Puerto Pollensa is a relaxed base in a horseshoe bay with a waterside promenade.

In the evenings, the sunsets in Calis Beach are renowned. Bitez, around a ten-minute drive to the west, is a more tranquil base with a Blue Flag beach that’s popular with families, whitewashed houses and watersports. Gümbet, between Bodrum and Bitez is a livelier base with a beach in a horseshoe bay, some of the biggest watersports centres in the area and picture-perfect windmills. With palm-fringed white-sand beaches, mesmerising Mayan ruins, crystal-clear cenotes (limestone sinkholes used as swimming spots) and tasty tacos, Mexico is a holiday destination of dreams for many families. Its excellent selection of all-inclusive resorts with fantastic food, private beaches and activities galore from watersports to tequila tasting for the adults only adds to its appeal. These resort towns are the all-inclusive family hotspots that you need to know about.

Cancun

Cancun’s pristine white sands, fiery food and nearby Mayan ruins have been attracting holidaymakers to Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula since Cancun was turned into a resort destination in the 1970s. While Cancun is known for its wild partying side, don’t let this put you off as its Hotel Zone is split into sections so, with the kids, it’s easily avoidable. Instead, head to an all-inclusive resort designed for families and flit between the beach, dreamy pools, mini discos, generous buffets and more. If you’re an active family, look for a resort with sports facilities from football and pickleball to paddleboarding. Outside of your hotel, all of the brood will be amazed by the Underwater Museum of Art (MUSA), cooling off in a cenote and a daytrip to Xcaret Park.

Riviera Maya

Running down Mexico’s Caribbean coastline from Puerto Morelos in the north to the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve in the south, Mexico’s Riviera Maya combines cocooning luxury all-inclusive hotels with options for adventure. Fun-filled Playa del Carmen is one of the most popular resorts for families with pearly white beaches – head to Punta Esmeralda where its cenote is shallow with a sandy bottom, perfect for smaller children – and attractions galore including the Xplor adventure park. Tulum further south is a more laid-back, bohemian slice of the coast where you can walk bare foot down sugar-sand beaches, snorkel above reefs and sleep in treehouses in the jungle. Visiting the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve to spot wildlife and float in a Mayan Canal is a must as is a stroll around Tulum’s ancient ruins. All-inclusive resorts in the Riviera Maya are impressive with sprawling grounds, colourful splash and waterparks, and tasty food that even the fussiest of eaters will devour.

Puerto Vallarta

Whether you’re after a fly-and-flop escape with your family or the ease of an all-inclusive base complemented by memorable days out, Puerto Vallarta ticks all of the boxes for an outstanding family holiday. On the west coast of Mexico, with pristine stretches of sand lapped by the Pacific Ocean, the town of Puerto Vallarta itself has an old town (Zona Romantica) to explore, enchanting wildlife to discover (if you’re visiting from August to December, look for tours to see a sea turtle release), botanical gardens and whale watching trips (in the winter months). Just outside in Nuevo Vallarta there’s the Aquaventuras Park waterpark, the Marietas Islands – a Unesco Biosphere Reserve – are just off the coast, and there are coves to explore via water taxi. The majority of Puerto Vallarta’s all-inclusive hotels are based on the beach with watersports to try, kids’ clubs to make friends in, swim-up bars and evening entertainment.

What’s included in an all-inclusive holiday?

Before you book an all-inclusive holiday, it’s important to check what’s included – and what isn’t – to make sure you’re happy with the deal you’ve found.

Meals and snacks

Generally, a minimum of three meals will be included in your all-inclusive price but there may be limits on the times you can eat these and the restaurants in your resort that you can eat them in. You may be limited to eating in more exclusive restaurants once or twice during your trip or you may have to pay a supplement to dine in them.

Snacks, such as ice-cream or cakes, are included in many all-inclusive deals, too. If these are important to you, make sure they are.

Drinks

Both soft and alcoholic drinks are usually included in the price of an all-inclusive holiday package but, again, check whether any exclusions apply. Alcohol-wise, local brands tend to be included but you may have to pay extra for premium or international brands. You may be limited to drinking alcohol between certain hours too. On the other-hand, premium all-inclusive packages may include a stocked mini bar in your room.

Soft-drink wise, you’ll be spoilt for choice but, again, premium brands such as Coca-Cola may cost more and water may be from a dispenser with limited or no bottled water, depending on your hotel’s policy.

Entertainment and activities

Many all-inclusive resorts not only keep you fed and watered, but they provide entertainment, too. This could be through animation teams who organise everything from games and sport sessions during the day to shows at night. Look at what the hotels you are considering include so you can find one to match your holiday style.

If you’re travelling with children and would like some entertainment for them, check whether there are dedicated activities or a kids’ club. If you’re going to an adults-only all-inclusive resort, look for one with activities that match your interests.

Resort facilities

Larger all-inclusive resorts may have extensive facilities from water parks and playgrounds for the kids to sports facilities such as tennis and padel courts. If your idea of a fun-filled all-inclusive holiday extends beyond the sun lounger, read the small print to find out what’s included as part of your holiday price and whether you need to pay extra for anything. And talking about sun loungers, double check that there aren’t any sneaky extra charges to reserve these or towels.

If you love water sports, many hotels include hire of bodyboards or snorkels in the price of an all-inclusive package but may charge extra for motorised water sports.

Airport transfers

Whether you’ve found a tempting budget all-inclusive deal or a luxury all-inclusive holiday, it’s worth making sure all your essentials are covered in the upfront price so you’re not caught out by unexpected extra charges. On TravelSupermarket, we make this easy as you can filter your results to show only deals with baggage and airport transfers included. If they’re not included, check how much transfers, baggage or car hire are to add on to make sure your deal is a good one.

Are all-inclusive holidays worth it?

With non-stop food and drink, plus more, included in the price, the initial cost of an all-inclusive holiday is likely to be more than a self-catering package or a holiday on a bed and breakfast basis. Whether this is worth it depends on your holiday style.

If you want to switch off with a fly-and-flop break and spend the majority of your holiday in your hotel, then the ease of having everything provided and being able to stick to a budget may make the extra upfront cost a no brainer.

If, however, you’d like to get out and about to explore your destination and work your way around local bars and restaurants, you may end up paying twice for food and drink or feel obliged to sacrifice your wish list to be in your hotel for mealtimes.

To feel confident that you’ve found a good all-inclusive deal, it’s worth comparing the price of an all-inclusive package at your chosen hotel with a bed and breakfast one and working out the difference. Then add a realistic cost for food and drink, plus anything else not included, to your self-catering or B&B cost to work out which is the best deal for you.

How to find the best all-inclusive deal

Whether you’re looking for some all-inclusive winter sun or a summer all-inclusive getaway, it’s always worth comparing your options side-by-side to make sure you’ve found a good deal.

You’re likely to find the best deals outside of school holidays. If a low price is your priority, be flexible with your days and dates of travel to scoop up the best bargains.

All-inclusive holiday FAQs

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance should I book an all-inclusive break?

Book your all-inclusive as early as possible if you’re travelling in peak periods such as school holidays. You may be able to take advantage of early deals including low deposit offers, free child places or complimentary upgrades.

If you’re more flexible, last-minute all-inclusive deals may suit better. Sign up to TravelSupermarket’s newsletter to hear about additional sales and deals first.

Are there all-inclusive holidays with free child places?

Yes. There are plenty of all-inclusive holiday deals that include free child places. These tend to be in high demand so booking early will give you the best choice. TravelSupermarket allows you to compare holidays with free child places from the UK’s top travel companies side-by-side.

What is all-inclusive plus?

Some resorts offer an all-inclusive plus basis, which usually means that, as well as the standard all-inclusive offering, premium drinks are included in your price. Other perks may include options such as a complimentary stocked mini bar, extra dining options, in-demand sun loungers or extra activities. Think about what’s important for you and check what’s included before booking.

Should I bring any money with me?

Yes. While all-inclusive holidays cover most in-resort expenses, you may want to budget for extras to make your holiday special. These could include spa treatments that aren’t included or excursions. If you’d like to bring gifts home, allow for this in your budget too. Alongside a credit or debit card, keep cash handy for tips for outstanding service.

How do I make sure my all-inclusive holiday is protected?

The best deal may not simply be the one with the lowest price. You can book with confidence knowing that all holidays found on TravelSupermarket are protected by the ATOL scheme which offers financial protection should your holiday company collapse.

ATOL is not a replacement for travel insurance, which should cover everything from medical expenses to stolen possessions.

How to find cheap all-inclusive holidays

Being flexible with when and where you travel will allow you to see the widest range of cheap deals. Some destinations may be cheaper when it comes to all-inclusive holidays, too.

Are there pay monthly options for all-inclusive holidays?

Yes. If you book far enough in advance, there are several all-inclusive deals with a low deposit or a pay monthly option. You can find out how these work, who offers them and see a selection on our flexible payment page

What’s the difference between full board and all-inclusive holidays?

Full board holidays tend to include all of your meals – breakfast, lunch and dinner – but not drinks or snacks. If you don’t drink alcohol or plan to hit a few bars outside of the hotel while away, it might be worth comparing the price of all-inclusive with full-board, checking any exclusions, to work out what’s the best value for you.

Are my flights included in an all-inclusive holiday package?

If you book an all-inclusive package holiday after finding a deal on TravelSupermarket, flights will be included. If you have already booked flights and are looking for an all-inclusive hotel deal, use our hotel tool instead – this is for accommodation only.
